Scholarships for Bright Children
Bright Poor Children who get excellent results at Ordinary Level and Advance Level fail to enter University due to lack of seats and also fail to do any other higher studies due to lack of finances in the family.
Berendina provides scholarships for children who have excelled in G.C.E Ordinary Level with a minimum of 6 credits with Maths who come from poor families either Samurdhi or per person income less than Rs.5000. Initially they are provided monthly educational support currently ranging from Rs.1000 to 1500. Initially the children and parents are mentored and progress in studies and attendance monitored. These students are provided with career counselling after Advance Level. Those who want a job are linked to a job in one of the 300+ companies working with Berendina to take entry level employees. (already over 18,300 youth including children who do not meet this criteria have been linked to jobs)However if they want to study further they are provided with fees upto Rs.50,000/-for 30+ approved courses like AAT,CMA, Nursing and a range of vocational training .
Berendina obtains the Advance level results from education department for the areas they currently work .These are Galle, Matara, Trinco, Batti, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, Anuradapura , Puttlam, Ampari, Kandy and Mullativu. They check on income status by visiting households, checking Samurdhi documents etc. Scholarship funds are transferred to a bank account of the parents. Monitoring is done twice a year to check on grades obtained in mid-year and end year exams. If someone has not performed or not gone to school the scholarship is terminated.
After “A” Level Results all children are given career counselling by staff trained by career counselling experts such as Mohan Pallaguru.
Those who wish to find employment immediately due inadequate credits to enter University and/or the need for income will be linked to employment in one of the 300+companies linked to Berendina Employment Center.
Those who can afford the time to do higher studies will be given scholarships of up to Rs.50,000 for 30 + courses approved by Berendina that lead to better employment and/or linked to vocational training. These include AAT, CMA, and Nursing etc.
3200 scholarships have been given since August 2015 by Berendina-Give2Lanka combined

Berendina commenced work in 1992 with a budget of Rs.1m in one village named Garagoda in Yatiyantota. In 2005, 2007, 2015 4 local NGO’s were formed to continue this work. Currently Berendina’s budget is over Rs.4 billion primarily due to a large micro finance program of excellence reaching 110,000 + families. They provide loans at the lowest interest rate by any NGO or private sector organization and yet makes a profit which is used for additional loans or for charity. In addition to this work they have a large plantation program working in over 70 estates. Berendina also provides monthly allowance to destitute families with no income. The program also enables social businesses such as linking private sector and co-operatives of youth to provide sub-contract work. One such project is to make vehicle seat belts for the automotive sector. The organization has given over 10,300 scholarships for vocational training. It is now managed by a Board consisting of local Directors with strong experience in development. All its agencies are not profit companies.
