Homes for Children-Karuwalagaswewa
Mr. Thilakaratna and his wife Somawathi lives in Karuwalagaswewa in the Saliyawewa GS Division which is a flood susceptible area. They have a 13 year old Daughter, a grade 9 bright child who schools Saliyawewa Vidyalaya. Mr. Thilakarathna earns a modest living as a daily wage worker at a nearby granite factory, whereas Somawathi babysits a child in a neighborhood household. Moreover to their collective income being bare minimum to put food on the table, they are simply not in a position to repair their house which is prone to flooding during the rainy season.
After a few occurrences of floods, their house is now in a dire need of resurrection. Because of their helplessness they continue to dwell in this house which now looks like a makeshift house and continue to face the various threats from nature and its seasonality.
The Solution: To build a small house with one bedroom and toilet which is livable.
Having found this family as a deserving beneficiary, Village Child Rights Monitoring Committee (VCRMC), has sought the assistance of IRSD to construct a new house. With many parties like, the Grama Niladari, local police officers, army officers and Unicef pooling in funds as well as labor, the construction work began in October 2016 but is now at a halt due to insufficient funds.
