Transportation for children of female headed households in north east

News article says “Child Development and Women Affairs Minister of Sri Lanka says the
government has identified over 59,000 war widows in the Northern and Eastern Provinces
following the end of the war.” Many of them have small children who are struggling to obtain an
education. One of Give2Lanka’s key programs is to provide transportation in the form of
bicycles to children of such female headed households enabling them to go to school as well as
classes easily . Thanks to the generous contribution of Sri Lankans Give2Lanka has so far
provided 56 bikes to kids in Jaffana and last week another 15 to female children of female
headed house holds in villages of Saukady, Palacholi and Lankeny in Chenkaldy division of
Batticaloa. This was possible from funds raised by the generous public. The last donation made
on Oct 28 th was for female school going children daughters of mothers who have lost their
husbands in these 2 villages. The donation was possible due to Zonta Club 111 and its energetic
secretary Ms. Farida Lukmanjee .The bicycles were handed over by Zonta Club 111 office
bearers/members together with Director and General Manager of Give2Lanka at the Divisional
Secretary’s office in Chenkaldy at a function headed by Divisional Secretary.
